When it comes to BBQs and grills, there’s one question that we get over and over again—are BBQ covers necessary? People tend to be passionate about this topic and there are arguments that back up both sides. As with most things in life, the answer to this particular question is not hard and steadfast. It depends on where you live, where your grill is located and the brand you’re using, but we recommend investing in a high-quality BBQ cover to help protect your grill.
The general argument for BBQ covers are that they protect grills from the elements—rain that could rust parts and the sun that could fade colours. Additionally, BBQ covers can keep falling debris out of your grill and help prevent birds and insects from taking up residence.
If you keep your grill operational year-round, BBQ covers will definitely help prevent snow from piling up on (and in) your grill, making it easier to grill up your dinner during our snow-filled, Ottawa winters.
So why would you not want to cover your grill? If you live in a very damp and humid area, keeping your grill covered—without proper ventilation—can trap moisture and cause corrosion. Other people just think it’s not necessary to cover grills and BBQs because they’re meant to be outside. While grills made with high-quality materials are built to withstand being outside, protecting your investment will extend the life of your equipment and help to ensure years of enjoyment in the future.
Invest in a high-quality cover that has ventilation and cover your BBQ, especially during inclement weather. But, if you forget to cover your BBQ for a night or even a week—don’t panic—wipe down your grill and cover it when it’s dry!
