Ottawa has long winters and what can sometimes feel like short summers. Make the most of our nice weather by cooking and eating as many meals outside as you can. To help, we’ve provided some of our favourite BBQ tips.
Make a Quick Appetizer with Cheese
Before grilling mains, if you have cheese with a rind—like brie or camembert—you can make a quick and delicious appetizer by grilling it for a few minutes on each side.
Don’t BBQ Meat Straight from the Fridge
Grilling cold meat can result in uneven cooking, so for best results, take meat out of the fridge for about 20 minutes before it goes on the grill.
Use a Potato to Help Food from Sticking
Rubbing a cut, raw potato over a preheated grill can help prevent food from sticking while grilling. The magic comes from the potato starch which acts as a barrier between the grill grates and your food.
Don’t Flip or Move Food Too Often
Patience is the key when grilling. When cooking meats, you want to develop a nice sear, which is hard if you’re constantly moving food on the grill. Pro tip: if you attempt to flip, and food is sticking, let it continue cooking—when a crust develops—you’ll be easily able to move it.
