Customers naturally have many questions when shopping for a new grill or barbeque, but one decision that can easily get overlooked is which type of cooking grids you should use. It’s hard to definitively say which is better—cast iron or stainless steel—but we’ve outlined all the advantages and disadvantages so you can enjoy the ultimate grilling experience!
Cast Iron Cooking Grids
The main benefits of using heavy cast iron cooking grids are their ability to retain and transfer heat more effectively. Although they take longer to heat up, cast iron cooking grids produce ideal sear marks. The main disadvantage of cast iron is that they require more maintenance and care. For example, you’re going to have to regularly clean the grids to help prevent rust build-up and will need to season the grill after each and every cleaning.
If the cast iron does develop rust, you can use abrasive cleaners like vinegar, baking soda or salt. Either soak the grill in vinegar or create a paste from baking soda or salt and apply. After allowing the vinegar or paste to penetrate the grill, use steel wool to remove the rust. Just remember to properly season the grill with oil after cleaning.
Stainless Steel Cooking Grids
Stainless steel grids are a good option because of their durability, affordability and the fact that they require less maintenance than cast iron grids. However, the main disadvantage is that they don’t retain heat as well. You can still produce sear marks, but it might take longer than with cast iron. Additionally, stainless steel grids will naturally develop a patina and discoloration over time. This is not harmful to your food and can be easily removed with mild soap and water. Learn more about the proper way to care and season stainless steel cooking grids.
