Many prospective homebuyers want a fireplace when purchasing a home. Not only does it provide extra comfort on colder days, but it can also provide a secondary source of heat in the case of a power outage. However, if you’re a homeowner going into your first winter with a wood-burning fireplace, you might not know how to ensure that it’s safe to use, proper maintenance to undertake and other fireplace advice.
Before lighting the first fire, you’ll want to ensure that the fireplace is properly installed and doesn’t pose any safety hazards. Before buying the home, you should have asked for a fireplace inspection, but if you didn’t, it’s always best to have it properly inspected before using. You’ll also want to ensure that you have a working smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector installed in the home and have the proper screens for in front of the fireplace.
A wood-burning fireplace will need to have yearly maintenance, which includes having the chimney cleaned. Make sure that part of the inspection includes a chimney sweep, or schedule one with a local company before lighting a fire for the first time. There could be nests or debris in the chimney or a creosote or soot buildup that could pose a problem.
Additional Fireplace Advice:
- Make sure to open the damper before lighting a fire. In most instances, pulling the damper down will open it, and pushing it up will close it.
- Don’t use your wood-burning fireplace as a way to dispose of trash. Only burn wood and approved starter material. Using wrapping paper, newspaper or other materials can contribute to creosote buildup.
- Make sure to clean out the ash regularly. Letting ash pile up could create a hazard and interfere with lighting a fire.
