Most people grill throughout the winter, but don’t always keep up with cleaning and maintenance. Now that the weather has started to warm up, spend some time inspecting your grill to ensure it’s safe and do a bit of deep cleaning so you’re ready for another spring season of backyard cookouts.
Check for leaks
When using natural gas or propane, it’s possible a dangerous leak could develop. An easy way to check is by brushing the lines and connections with soapy water and turning on the grill. If any bubbles form, it indicates a leak that needs to be investigated and repaired.
Check propane levels
If you’re using a propane grill and are unsure how full it is, you can pour a glass of warm water down the side of the tank. Next, run your hand down the tank and you should notice a distinct change of temperature from warm to cold. The beginning of the cold section of the tank indicates where the fuel stops.
Clean grates, interior and lid
Remove the grill and deep clean. Dish soap and water is usually all you need to dislodge baked-on food. The interior can usually be cleaned with a solution of one-part water, one-part distilled white vinegar while stainless steel exteriors should be cleaned with a SS cleaner.
Clean tubes and burners
Make sure that gas ports and tubes are clear of debris and build-up. Refer to your owner’s manual for safety instructions and on the best way to unclog these components.
Remove ash or grease
If you have a charcoal grill, scrape and empty any leftover ash from previous uses. Remember to check the ash catcher! For gas grills, empty and clean the grease trap.
With just a little time, you can ensure that your grill is ready for the spring and summer season!
