- BBQs, Tips, Winter
There are no two ways about it, Ottawa winters are cold. The bleak winter days, snow and windchill make most of us want to stay inside by the fire. However, next week there are predictions that the weather might warm up for a few days. While the mercury will still be below zero, minus seven will feel like a tropical paradise compared to the arctic chill we’ve been experiencing. Take advantage of the upswing in temperature and pull out the grill for a mid winter BBQ!
While most people think grilling is only a summer activity, with some prep, you can enjoy a winter BBQ while watching the snow fall around you.
- Make sure you have a clear path to your grill. Take a few minutes to shovel off any snow in your way and throw down some salt so you don’t slip.
- Dress for the weather, but ensure that any scarf or jacket you’re wearing won’t fall into the flames of the grill.
- Keep the lid closed! Everytime you open the BBQ lid, you’re letting out heat and extending cooking time. Resist the temptation of constantly checking your food and open the lid only when necessary.
- Check your fuel before you start grilling. Since many people don’t use their grills as much in the winter, you might have forgotten how much propane or charcoal you have on hand.
Remember to always use your grill and BBQ outdoors. Never bring them inside.
Just because it’s January doesn’t mean you can’t have a winter BBQ. With a little prep, you can enjoy a perfectly grilled meal any time of the year.
