There are many ways to light a charcoal grill and everyone has their preferred method. To get your bbq perfect every time, make sure you start with a clean grill, have the right materials and allow ample time to get the grill warmed up. To help light the charcoal, we recommend using a chimney starter.
It’s important to start with a clean bbq. When trying to light a charcoal grill, you don’t want any residual grease that can catch fire. Also, make sure to clean out any leftover ash from previous uses.
Make sure to have everything you need to light a charcoal grill close by before you start. You can use either lump charcoal or briquettes, and it’s important you have enough on hand for the amount of food you’re grilling. Remember—charcoal takes longer to heat up than a gas grill and you should allow at least 20 minutes from lighting to starting to cook.

Deciding which is better is mostly a matter of preference. Charcoal is made by slowly burning wood—without oxygen—until the water, sap and natural chemicals have been removed. Briquettes use the same burning process but are made from sawdust, leftover wood and additives.
Kamado Grills – We suggest only using lump charcoal for Kamado grills. It’s also important to note that manufacturers recommend that you never use lighter fluid in a Kamado—as is it can penetrate the ceramic—causing damage and altering the flavour of food.
A chimney starter is an easy way to light a charcoal grill and doesn’t require the use of lighter fluid. To use, take the cooking grate off and place the chimney starter on the charcoal grate. Use newspaper to fill the bottom and fill the rest of the chimney with charcoal. Light the newspaper and watch as the charcoal ignite. Once the charcoal is glowing, you can pour it carefully into the grill and you’re ready to cook!
