Don’t let the sub-zero temperatures stop you from enjoying freshly grilled or smoked foods. While you can use a gas grill in the winter, a kamado smoker holds heat better and can provide a more enjoyable winter grilling experience.
Kamado smokers are unique, ceramic products that can be used for both grilling and smoking. The Big Green Egg is probably the most well-known kamado brand, but other lines, like the Saffire Grills, are equally impressive.
Kamado smokers are a good option for cold weather because the ceramic acts as insulation, making it extremely efficient for grilling in cold weather. While it might take a bit more fuel to get warmed up, once you reach your desired grilling/smoking temperature, you’ll notice a more even and steady cook.
If you plan on using your kamado smoker in the winter, there’s really nothing you have to do differently than if you were using it in the summer. However, we do recommend covering your smoker between uses. The gaskets of kamados can freeze together if they get wet, but by covering the unit between uses, you should prevent any issues of the gaskets becoming wet.
Also, it should go without saying, but only use kamado smokers outside. Never use a smoker inside or in a closed space—including the garage.
