Winter Food Smoking Tips
Just because you’re experiencing an Ottawa winter doesn’t mean you can’t use your smoker! At Harding The Fireplace, we sell a line of Kamado smokers that stand up well to our winter weather. Just follow these winter smoking tips and enjoy some smoked ribs all year long!
Bring Temperature Up Slowly
The most important winter smoking tip is to allow your smoker to come up to temperature slowly. It will take longer to heat up, so just remember to factor that in and plan ahead. Once the smoker has risen to the desired temperature, you can use it just like you would in the warmer months.
While part of the fun of smoking food is the amount of time you get to spend outdoors, when the mercury dips below freezing, you probably want to limit your outdoor time. Make sure to prep everything you need inside and dress warmly when heading outside—even if it’s only for a few minutes.
Invest in a Wireless Thermometer
If you don’t already have one, you should invest in a wireless thermostat. You can set it up when you put your food in and then keep an eye on the temperature from the comfort of your home. The Kamado Smokers are designed to be used with the lid down, so your temperature shouldn’t fluctuate too much—even in the colder weather.
Just because it’s still winter doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your Kamado smoker! Just remember to use your smoker in a well-ventilated area; never in a garage or other enclosed area.
